PUBLIC SAFETY POSITIONS

Firefighter/Paramedic-Applications accepted for hiring pool-Fire Department-Duties: Provides advanced life support services & renders medical treatment in emergency situations; engages in fire suppression & fire prevention activities to protect & safeguard lives & property. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Certification Requirements: Must be National Registry or State of Kansas certified & maintain certification as a Paramedic including PALS, ACLS, & NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess a valid Kansas Class B driver’s license, or obtain within one year of appointment. Successful candidates are prohibited from smoking or using tobacco products at any time, on or off the job. Pay: $43,709-69,801/yr.

Police Officer-Application deadline: Until filled–Police Department-Duties: Protecting, serving, & working with Salina’s diverse citizenry & enforcing the law while protecting the constitutional rights of all. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Qualifications include: United States citizen; twenty-one (21) years of age at time of appointment; no felony convictions, domestic violence related conviction, or other serious misdemeanor convictions; good physical condition; eyesight: 20/100 correctable to 20/20, no upper acuity limit with contact lenses; ability to obtain Kansas Police Officer certification within one year of appointment. Selection process includes: Written test, two assessment interviews, psychological evaluation, computer voice stress analyzer examination, thorough background check, physical examination, & drug screen. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess valid Kansas driver’s license. Successful candidates are prohibited from smoking or using tobacco products at any time, on or off the job. Written test is held the 3rd Saturday of each month. Starting pay: $41,600/yr.

Firefighter/EMT-Applications accepted for hiring pool- Fire Department-Duties: Responds to fire alarms & other emergency calls to protect life & property by combating, extinguishing & preventing fires; gives basic life support care to sick or injured persons; participates in fire prevention programs, inspection, training activities, maintenance of fire & EMS apparatus & equipment & stations. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Certification Requirements: CPAT; Firefighter I & Firefighter II certified; Hazmat operations; National Registry or Kansas EMT certified & must maintain EMT certification; NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800. Requirements: Must be eighteen (18) years of age minimum; must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess a valid Kansas Class B driver’s license, or obtain within one year of appointment. TECHNICAL POSITIONS 

Building Official-Application deadline: Until filled-Development/Building Services–Duties: Plans, organizes & oversees skilled inspections to ensure compliance with building codes & ordinances; performs plan review & code interpretation. Education: Multi-level certifications in commercial & residential inspections including plumbing, electric, & mechanical inspections. International Code Council Building Official or similar certification & bachelor’s degree in construction sciences, architecture, or related experience preferred. Experience: Minimum of five years building trades/inspection experience & two years supervisory experience. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess valid Kansas driver’s license. Pay:$61,951-103,597/yr. 

Master Electrician-Application deadline: Until filled-Parks & Recreation-Duties: Performs master level electrical maintenance & repairs in the construction, installation, alteration, maintenance, & repair of electrical, electronic systems, instruments, apparatus, & equipment, including high & low voltage. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.; master electrician license required; HVAC/Mechanical Contractor License desired.  Experience: Four years in electrical & mechanical work. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess valid Kansas driver’s license.  Hours: Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pay: $17.42-19.51/hr.

GIS/Utility Technician-Application deadline: Until filled-Utilities–Duties: Performs technical work in the maintenance & updating of GIS mapping & as-built utility maps.  Education: Technical school graduate. Experience: Two years of experience in drafting (Auto Cad preferred); familiarity with Utilities design & Utilities system modeling preferred. Must have knowledge of surveying, mathematics, & land records; knowledge & understanding of GIS hardware & software operations; understanding of personal computers, plotters, printers & associated hardware & software. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas driver’s license. Starting pay: $17.42/hr.

EngineeringTech II (Pavement Management)-Application deadline: Until filled-PublicWorks/Engineering–Duties: Position is responsible for implementation & maintenance of pavement management system; requires ability to effectively assess condition of both asphalt & concrete pavements, prioritize locations in need of maintenance, & suggest appropriate maintenance options that best increases the life span of the pavement with cost effective solutions; performs technical engineering drafting, design, surveying & construction inspections; administrative support; maintains records & asset management; daily customer service. Education: High school graduate or G.E.D; completion of two year engineering course, or related course work. Experience: Three years’ experience in engineering technical work & drafting. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas driver’s license & have, or be able to obtain, CDL within 180 days of employment. Pay: $15.77 - $25.16/hr. DOQ.

SKILLED LABOR POSITIONS

Park Supervisor-Application deadline: TH 05/11/2017-Parks & Recreation–Duties: Performs work in the operation & maintenance of City of Salina’s parks, aquatic center, athletic fields, downtown landscaping, medians, & natural areas; oversees maintenance of equipment & buildings; performs installation & repair of park equipment, shelter houses & restrooms; designs & supervises the installation of landscaped areas, including plant material & hardscape; formulates turf management to include fertilizers, pesticides, & irrigation systems; work involves some responsibility for planning, scheduling & supervising personnel engaged in the maintenance of grounds & buildings; acts as foreman for one or more crews in parks facilities maintenance & construction; supervises seasonal work crews; oversees personnel which includes maintaining time sheets, training employees, covering safety procedures & scheduling work for volunteers.  Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. with college course work ortraining in natural resources, construction, or related field. Experience: Three years of experience in grounds, structural & equipment maintenance, including one year in a lead or supervisory capacity. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.  Pay: $34,528-38,667/yr.

Landfill Operator I-Application deadline: Until filled-PublicWorks/Landfill Duties: Performs skilled & semi-skilled work in the maintenance & operation of the City of Salina’s municipal solid waste landfill; operates & maintains medium & heavy equipment. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: Three years of progressively responsible construction & maintenance work operating light & medium equipment; one year of experience operating heavy equipment; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement, or obtain within three months of appointment.  Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm with 1/2 hour lunch. Pay:$12.99-14.55/hr.

Sanitation Worker / Driver-Application deadline: Until filled-PublicWorks/Sanitation- Duties: Performs heavy manual labor in the collection of refuse and/or recycling materials; operates medium equipment & heavy duty trucks. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: One year sanitation worker or experience with small trucks & light equipment in construction, maintenance, or related activities; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions; heavy manual labor & outside work experience desired. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas commercial driver’s license (CDL) with airbrake endorsement; must be able to perform heavy manual labor & run designated routes; must be eighteen (18) yrs. of age or older. Work Type: Heavy manual labor, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds for force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Starting pay: $12.37/hr.

PART-TIME & SEASONAL POSITIONS 

Custodian I (Part-Time) Parks-Application deadline: Until filled-Parks & Recreation-Duties: Cleans & maintains various municipal & outside agency buildings as assigned; sweeps, scrubs, hard surface floors; maintains inventory of cleaning equipment & supplies; empties & cleans waste receptacles; washes windows & walls; locks & unlocks doors, windows & security systems; replaces light bulbs & fluorescent tubes; maintains equipment & materials; cleans & disinfects restrooms cleans grounds by picking up paper & trash; raise, lower & maintain flags; performs visual checks on all mechanical systems, the buildings & grounds for repairs; shovels snow as assigned.  Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience:  Minimum of one year experience with custodial/janitorial related work; must be self-motivated & be able to work with little to no supervision. Requirements: Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license. Hours: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, 24 hours/week; March1-October 31. Pay: $9.69 –10.85/hour.

Park & Facility Maintenance I (Temporary Seasonal)–Application deadline: Until filled-This classification is the entry level of the park & facility maintenance classification & is categorized as a part-time or seasonal classification in support of maintaining outdoor spaces in the following areas: aquatics, athletics, golf course, natural resources, & parks. Duties: Performs manual labor in the care, minor construction & maintenance of facilities & outdoor spaces; assists with planting & maintenance of trees in parks & around public buildings & facilities; performs janitorial duties in & around park, recreation, city buildings & other public facilities; maintains park grounds including seeding, mowing, watering, aerification, top dressing, planting flowers, weed removal, painting, fence repair, dirt work & related duties; drives trucks, tractors, utility vehicles, mowers, & other equipment as required. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: Grounds maintenance & equipment operation experience desired, minor construction, maintenance work, mowing, or tree care. Requirements: Valid driver’s license; 18 yrs. of age or older preferred. Hours: Varies, may work evenings & weekends; generally works May - August. Pay:$8.25-9.25/hr.

Flood Control Laborer (Temporary Seasonal)-Application deadline: Until filledPublic Works/Flood Control-Duties: Performs maintenance on city flood control system including tree trimming, weed removal, trash pickup, tractor mowing, general labor, & equipment maintenance. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: Previous tree trimming, mowing, equipment maintenance or related work preferred.  Requirements: Must be minimum eighteen (18) yrs. of age; must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license; Hours: June-August, M-F 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Starting pay: $8.25/hr.

Traffic Control Laborer (Temporary Seasonal)-Application deadline: Until filled–Public Works/Streets & Traffic-Duties: Performs maintenance on city traffic control devices including painting, weed control, trash removal, & washing vehicles. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: Previous painting, weed removal, car washing, or related work preferred. Requirements: Must be minimum eighteen (18) yrs. of age; must possess valid Kansas driver’s license. Hours: June-August M-F from 6:30a.m.–3:00 p.m. Starting pay: $8.25/hr. 

Lifeguard I (Temporary Seasonal)-Application deadline: Until filled-Parks & Recreation-Certified Lifeguard applications accepted. Duties: Enforces waterpark rules & regulations; ensures the safety of all water park patrons;  instructs during swim lessons. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: Previous experience weighs heavily in the selection process. Requirements: 15 yrs. of age or older; must have valid & current lifeguard training course certification prior to beginning work as a lifeguard. Hours: Varies, includes evenings & weekends. Pay: $7.75-8.75/hr. Salary determined by seniority & availability to work.
